When a jump start is not enough

What we do
We tell you whether the battery is finished, and talk about a new one if it is.

Price
One call-out price, no distance charge

A jump start puts enough power into a car to start it. It does not fix a battery that can no longer hold a charge. If you are calling us for the second time in a week, the jump is not the real problem.

Signs the battery is finished

  • It needs a jump again within a day or two
  • It starts fine on mild days and fails every cold morning
  • It is four or five years old, or you do not know how old it is
  • The battery case looks swollen, cracked or wet

Other reasons a car battery keeps going flat

  • Something stays on when the car is parked: a boot light, a glovebox light, a dash cam, a tracker
  • Most journeys are short, so the battery never gets back to full
  • The car is not charging the battery while it runs. A battery warning light while driving points that way

What we do

When we come out for a jump, we look at the battery and the connections and tell you plainly what we think. If the battery is the problem, we can talk about fitting a new one. The price depends on the battery your car takes, and you hear it before anything is fitted.

What we will not do

Sell you a battery you do not need. If the battery is fine and the fault is elsewhere, we will say so.

Questions about this

Can you test my battery?

We look at it when we come out and tell you what we think. If you want a new one fitted, you hear the price first.

How long should a car battery last?

Often around four to five years, less with lots of short trips. Cold mornings show up an old one first.

Is it the alternator?

If the battery warning light comes on while you drive, the charging may be the problem. That needs a mechanic, and we will tell you if that is what we think.
