A jump should help

What does the car do when you turn the key?

The classic flat battery. A jump start usually gets it going.

A guide, not a diagnosis. Readings are typical figures for a 12V car battery.

Why cars won’t start in winter

The cold does not kill a battery. It finds the weak one.

On a frosty night the chemistry inside a battery slows down, while thick cold oil makes the engine harder to turn. A battery that coped all summer can run out of strength on the first hard morning of October, and it nearly always picks a morning when you are already late.

Short trips make it worse. So do lights in the dark, heated seats and screens, and a battery that is four or five years old. None of that is a fault on its own. Together, they leave the car one cold night away from a click.

Before you call: switch off the lights, fan and radio, wait a minute, and try once more. Do not keep turning the key: it drains what is left.

What we do

Jump starts for cars, vans, hybrids and EVs.

Most mornings it is the battery, and a jump gets the car moving. Sometimes it needs a different approach, and we tell you so before anyone sets off.

EV and hybrid 12V battery

The big battery can be full and the car still will not wake up.

Electric and hybrid cars keep a small 12V battery for the locks, the screens and the system that puts the car into ready. When that one goes flat, the car can look dead even with a full charge in the main pack.

Many makers fit a dedicated jump point, and some are fussy about how it is used. Read us the make, model and year from the logbook or the app, and you will know on that call whether we can do it.

Questions

Jump start questions, before you call.

How much is a jump start in Dublin?

€120, one flat call-out price, and we do not add a charge for distance. You hear the figure on the phone before anyone sets off.

Can you jump start an electric or hybrid car?

Often, yes. These cars have a small 12V battery that wakes the car up, and that EV 12V battery is usually what has gone flat. Tell us the make, model and year first, because some cars have their own jump points.

What if the jump start does not work?

Then the battery is probably finished or the fault is somewhere else. We tell you what we found, and if a new battery is the answer we can talk about fitting one.

Do you do vans?

Most vans and light commercial vehicles, yes. Tell us what it is when you call.

Where do you come out to for a jump start?

Homes, workplaces, car parks and roadsides across Dublin, Meath and Wicklow. Read us an Eircode, or simply the name of your estate, and we can answer yes or no right there.
