Why does my car battery keep going flat? Five common causes

One flat battery can happen to anyone. A battery that keeps going flat has a cause. These are the five most common.

1. Short trips

A battery recharges while you drive. If most of your journeys are short, it never gets full again, and a cold morning will find it empty.

2. An old or worn battery

After several years a battery loses capacity. It can start the car on a warm day and fail on the first cold one. A test shows how much life is left.

3. Something is draining it

Interior lights, a faulty boot or door switch, an alarm, a dash cam or a tracker can drain the battery overnight. If the car is flat after standing for a day or two, ask a mechanic to look for a drain.

4. The car is not charging the battery

If the battery warning light comes on while you drive, the charging system may not be working. Get it checked soon, because the car may stop.

5. The weather

Cold reduces what a battery can give. Heat can wear it out faster. Neither is a fault, but both show up a weak battery.

What to do

A jump start gets you moving. If it happens again within a few days, have the battery and the charging system tested, and replace the battery if it is worn out.
